- The Pine Island Panther Softball Team traveled to Austin Friday afternoon anticipating a two day Elks Tournament. The weather got in the way, however, and the entire event was carried out on Friday night. The Panthers won the first two games and then dropped a 10-8 game to Owatonna to finish in second place. PI opened the tournament with a 5-4 win over Simley. Most of the action for the Panthers came in the fifth inning. Taylor Bates led things off by reaching base on an error. After singles by Bruche Miller and Alison Newton, Katie Thein hit a blast that reached the centerfield fence and she cleared the bases with a three run, inside the park homerun. Kaitlyn Campbell picked up the win with relief help from Miller in the seventh. The bats came alive in the second game, as the Panthers racked up 17 hits in a 16-2 win over Albert Lea. Brenna Lien, Sarah Lenn, Kamyn Peterson-Rucker, Shelby Kann, Courtney Pahl, and Katie Thein had multiple hit games. Bruche Miller recorded the win while Alison Newton finished the game by pitching the last inning. Peterson-Rucker hit a homerun in the first inning to drive in three. In the championship game PI jumped out to an 8-3 lead after three innings, but Owatonna stormed back to take the lead in the fifth when they plated five runs. Bruche Miller started the game, and Kaitlyn Campbell pitched the final 2 2/3 innings. Courtney Pahl, Katie Thein, and Alison Newton were named to the all-tournament team. The Panthers play three games this week. Tuesday night they travel to Houston, Thursday night they host Lake City, and Friday night St. Charles comes to town.

- The Pine Island Varsity Baseball team defeated Goodhue on Friday, April 27th, at Goodhue, 13-6. Josh Torkelson had 4 hits and Adam Pleschcourt had 4 RBIs to pace a 13 hit attack. Colton Sinning picked up the win and had last inning relief help from Jordan Pin. Tonight the Panthers travel to the Blue Division leading Cannon Falls for a 5:00 PM game. The game will be broadcast on KDHL Radio with the pregame show starting at 4:45 PM. It is on 920 AM.

- Throughout the twilight hours of spring and summer, Minnesota's frogs and toads can be heard calling from our ponds and wetlands. But can you identify who is calling by the sounds you hear? If you are interested in learning about the frogs and toads native to Minnesota, stop by Ms. Schimek's room to learn more about how you can become one of the few how can differentiate between the calls Spring Peeper, the Chorus Frog, the Northern Leopard Frog, Green Frog, American Toad, and others!

- Student Council Elections for the 2012-2013 school year: president-elect (must be a sophomore or junior and held 1 term on council), vice president, secretary, treasurer (must have held 1 term on council for each of these) or 3 representative positions available for each grade 9-12. Finally, 2 new positions are available for student school board members-you must be a junior or senior next year to run for these. See Mrs. Kabat or Mrs. Kohner with any questions.

- To run for a position, go to PI's Moodle page (https://moodle.pineisland.k12.mn.us/) and click on "Stud Co." You must "enroll" in the course, and to do so, use your school login and password. When it asks for the "enrollment key," type in "studco."

- Open the "Student Council Election Form" and follow the directions on that form-this is where you select which position you are running for and type your 300-word essay (please highlight your work ethic, ability to follow through on tasks, ways in which you are a positive student leader, reasons why you want to serve your school, and also limit humor). You must save this Word document to your flash drive/hard drive/etc.

- Finally, upload the document to the correct drop box, based on the position for which you are running. This is just like uploading a photo to Facebook or any other sharing site.

- Submissions are due by Tuesday, May 8th at 3:15 p.m. on Moodle. Please see Mrs. Kabat concerning problems with uploading to Moodle.

- JUNIOR PARENTS - All of the Post Prom Party plans are finalized, so now what we need is YOU! We're looking for the following donations:

Please contact Cheryl Woodward, cherwood@pitel.net or 356-4699 by April 17. Thanks!

- Amber Buck and Nate Simon -- please see Ms. Thompson ASAP!
-
- The varsity baseball team recovered from a disappointing sweep by Rochester Lourdes last Friday, and assured themselves of at least a share of third place in the Blue Division of the Hiawatha Valley Conference, with a 5-1 victory over Triton. Colton Sinning fired a 2 hitter and Ben Warneke went 2-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Bryce Crowson scored a pair of runs to lead the offense. The team will close out their home season on Friday, May 18th, when they host Montgomery-Lonsdale for a 5:00 PM start. It will be Senior Night, Little League Night, and volunteer 7th grade coach, Jay Strande, will be throwing out the first pitch. In addition, the flag that flew over the base that Jay served at in Afghanistan, will be presented by our local boy scout troupe, and will fly during the game. All Little Leaguers that attend the game may sign up for prizes to be given away at the end of each half inning.
-
- The Pine Island Panther varsity softball team rebounded from two disappointing losses to Zumbrota-Mazeppa and Rochester Lourdes last week with an inspiring 3-2 extra inning win over Kenyon Wanamingo Tuesday night. Shelby Kann scored the go ahead run in the top half of the ninth after she had led off the inning with a hard single up the middle. Sarah Lenn pushed Kann to second on with a beautiful bunt, and Cede Finstuen moved Kann to third with another bunt single. Bruche Miller then launched a drive deep enough to center to score Shelby from third base. Miller then went to the mound and shut down the Knights in order in the bottom half of the inning, striking out the final batter. Alison Newton started the game for PI, pitching five strong innings while giving up four hits and striking out 8. Miller relieved Newton in the sixth, pitched her way out of a jam, and went the final four innings giving up one hit and striking out five. Newton and Kann each had a pair of hits in the contest. Courtney Pahl and Cede Finstuen had the other two hits for the Panthers. The team now travels to LaCrescent Friday night for their last regular season game.
