PHILOSOPHY OF A GYMNASTICS COACH

I believe that any girl should be have the opportunity to participate in the sport of gymnastics. It is a fiercely competitive individual sport that develops mental toughness and self-confidence as much as it develops athletic skills.

While any girl should have the opportunity to become part of a competitive team, the fact is that gymnastics is a largely individual competitive sport cannot be ignored. Placement in the gymnastic team lineup is a result of consistent personal performance at a high level and is not a reward for longevity. Every gymnast should be given an equal opportunity to become a competitive team member but she must also be aware that in order to do so requires a great deal of personal commitment to training.

I believe in the team concept even though gymnastics is basically an individual sport. Teammates can peer coach each other and help each other through the slumps and hard times that occur in any season. Team character can be a self-defining process for all team members.

I will encourage gymnasts to set personal goals that, I turn, will make them more accountable for their choices and their commitment. It is my responsibility as a coach to help them realize their goals.

I believe that a coach’s responsibility to a gymnast rests upon a safe and reasonable progression through the skill levels that exist in gymnastics. A coach should never ask a gymnast to perform a skill that is neither safe nor reasonable for her to attempt. However, a coach should always expect a gymnast to perform at the skill level that she is capable of performing at and both encourage and require her to progress to the next level of performance.

As a coach I expect to make this philosophy evident to my gymnasts by being clear when outlining my expectation and by being both fair and consistent in the enforcement of my expectations for both the individual gymnasts and the teams.
